COP OUT (2010) Blu-Ray Review

WHAT IS IT ABOUT?

A cop (Bruce Willis) tries to pay for his daughter’s wedding with an old baseball card. When it is stolen in a robbery, he and his partner (Tracy Morgan) try to track it down.

Seann William Scott, Kevin Pollak, Adam Brody, Jason Lee, Michelle Trachtenberg, Rashida Jones, Jim Norton, Susie Essman and Fred Armisen also appear.

WHO MADE IT?

Writers Robb and Mark Cullen were writer/ producters of the TV series LAS VEGAS.

It was directed by Kevin Smith (CLERKS, CHASING AMY).

IS IT ANY GOOD?

After years of writing and directing his own films, Kevin Smith decided to try and branch out, directing a script from someone else.

The result?

Well, Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan are always fun to watch. Here, they make the material watchable. But this is far from a great film.

The film is neither all that funny, and the police storyline doesn't work either.

While it has a great supporting cast, actors like Rashida Jones and Fred Armisen appear, they are wasted. Some of the characters only have a scene or two.

Smith doesn’t really bring much to the material, other than some of his usual vulgarity that is overdone.

I’d say again that I wish he would try for a PG-13, but when he last did that, the result was JERSEY GIRL, his worst film to date.

WHAT IS ON THE BLU-RAY.

The film is available to view in what is called MAXIMUM COMEDY MODE. This version, running an hour longer, features the film interrupted by comments by Smith (who appears on camera), deleted scenes shown where originally intended, and alternate takes / bloopers of certain scenes. It is a very entertaining way to look at the film, more fun than the actual film. But running almost 3 hours, it is only for the die hard fans.

There are also a few featurettes

Fans of the director and stars might find it worth a look, especially the Maximum Comedy Mode, although it isn’t a career highpoint for anyone involved.
