The Top Ten in 1985: Music Was Better 25 Years Ago

Looking over the current Top Ten songs, I honestly haven’t heard half of them, and of that other half, probably could only sing one or two of them.

Yet, looking back at the Top Ten songs of January 31st, 1985, I know and still like them all.

Was music better 25 years ago?

Am I alone or just getting old?

10. PRINCE AND THE REVOLUTIONI Would Die 4 U” - Prince doesn’t like to have his clips on Youtube, but you all know this, don’t you?

9. BILLY OCEAN “Loverboy” - I always liked "Get Out Of My Dreams" better.

8. DON HENLEY “Boys of Summer” - One of the great videos of all time. I wrote about it previously in my "Whatever Happened to 80's Music Video Stars" piece.

7. BRYAN ADAMS “Run To You” - Another great song and great video. Adams made a series of interrelated videos with this album. I mentioned this in the same piece above.  It was a great year for music videos.

6. JACK WAGNER “All I Need” - Sure, he was a soap opera song, but for mid 80’s soft rock, it wasn’t bad.

5. WHAM “Careless Whisper” - I was never much of a Wham fan. Probably because my sister was  playing their cassette all the time.

4. PHILIP BAILEY WITH PHIL COLLINS “Easy Lover” - Still holds up. I miss Phil Collins.

3. CHICAGO “You’re The Inspiration” - Funny that the above was the only clip of Peter Cetera singing the song that I could find.  The video isn't on Youtube.

2. FOREIGNER “I Want To Know What Love Is” - This was so overplayed at the time that, 25 years later, I am still kind of sick of it.

1. MADONNA “Like A Virgin” - Not one of my favorite Madonna songs, but it was undeniably popular.

I may be getting old. I may find today's music entirely uninteresting, but as I look over this music from when I was 14, I still can't come to any positive conclusions about the music then.

"I Would Die 4 U" was the least of the the "Purple Rain" album and terribly overplayed, but that still may be the best song on this list.

I'll admit to having been a really big fan of "Boys of Summer" at the time, but Henley's relentless douchiness in years since have left a bad taste in my mouth.

Billy Ocean has always been like the musical equivalent of nails on a chalkboard (or a kick in the crotch) to me, and this has not been improved by the fact that our cultural nostalgia machinery has ensured that he's never entirely left my consciousness.

On the other hand, Bryan Adams and Wham! live better for me now, freed of 14 year angst and need to be cool, those seem like solid listenable pop songs.

OMG...Those songs bring back memories of me practicing my kissing skills with my pillow.
