The following is part of the James Bond Blogathon hosted by the Lazy Eye Theatre.
The opening themes to the James Bond films are always an important part of the film. With Maurice Binder’s production design, they were early versions of music videos. Even after the invention of MTV, the openings rarely changed much.
Here are some of the most memorable theme songs.
“Goldfinger” by Shirley Bassey - The favorite theme of many, especially of the Connery era.
“Live and Let Die” by Wings - Paul McCartney still performs this in concert, so he must be happy with it.
“Nobody Does It Better” by Carly Simon (from THE SPY WHO LOVED ME) - I think I knew this song before seeing the film.
“For Your Eyes Only” by Sheena Easton - The first time a singer appeared in the opening, it still has one of the best “feels” of a James Bond theme.
“A View to a Kill” by Duran Duran - One of the most popular Bond themes, as far as MTV airplay goes. But, one of the worst Bond films (and I say that as a Roger Moore fan).
“License to Kill” by Gladys Knight. - I barely remember this movie, but have to say, the song is probably one of the better latter day Bond themes.
“Die Another Day” by Madonna - A lot of people hate this song, yet I find it one of the catchier songs of recent Madonna. I guess that isn’t saying much though.
