DVD OF THE WEEK


WALT DISNEY TREASURES – Each year, Disney releases several special editions in collectors tins featuring classic films and shorts from the Disney vaults. This year, the three DVDs are THE CHRONOLOGICAL DONALD VOLUME 4 (Donald Duck cartoons made between 1951-1961), DR SYN: THE SCARECROW OF ROMNEY MARSH (Patrick McGoohan’s cult series ), and MICKEY MOUSE CLUB PRESENTS ANNETTE (Episodes of everyone’s favorite Mouseketeer 1957-1958).

HELLBOY 2 – Guillermo Del Toro’s sequel.

STAR WARS THE CLONE WARS – The Star Wars film that no one saw is now on DVD. Most reviews said it played as a TV series, so it is sure to do better in this format.

QUO VADIS – 2 DVD special edition of the Robert Taylor and Deborah Kerr film.

PARAMOUNT CENTENNIAL COLLECTION - Normally, I don't cover reissues, especially from titles that have been released multiple times. But Paramount is releasing three titles this week that are said to be worth upgrading. SUNSET BOULEVARD, SABRINA and ROMAN HOLLIDAY are all being reissued with improved transfers and a disc of extras (documentaries on the people involved and the making of the films). I hate to tell you if you already own these titles, but you may have to buy them again.

BOYS IN THE BAND – William Friedkin’s 1970 film.

BEER FOR MY HORSES – Ever wanted to see a film with Toby Keith, Barry Corbin, Gina Gershon and Ted Nugent? Then this is for you.

PERFECT HOLIDAY – Holiday film with Morris Chestnut and Gabrielle Union.

WB CLASSIC HOLIDAY COLLECTIONS – Two box sets each with different films. Volume 1 includes BOYS TOWN, A CHRISTMAS CAROL (1938), and CHRISTMAS IN CONNECTICUT. Volume 2 is ALL MINE TO GIVE, HOLIDAY AFFAIR, IT HAPPENED ON 5th AVENUE, and BLOSSOMS IN THE DUST.

OFF THE BAA – Shaun the Sheep stars in this spin off of Wallace and Gromit.

HANOI HILTON – The 1987 Vietnam War film. The DVD includes a new interview with Senator John McCain. Since he recorded this interview months ago, I bet he wishes this had been released a few weeks earlier.

THE GENERAL – 2 DVD special edition of the Buster Keaton film.

JOHNNNY CARSON CELEBRATES CHRISTMAS – Special collection of the best Christmas moments from THE TONIGHT SHOW.
