STAR OF THE FUTURE: Amanda Seyfried

Amanda Seyfried is an actress that I have seen in many things over the years, including two of my TV favorite shows, but for a while, I never really knew her name.

She was in MEAN GIRLS, and very funny in it. Yet Lindsay Lohan and Tina Fey seemed to get all the attention in that film.

She played Kristen Bell’s best friend in the first season of VERONICA MARS, whose death triggers that season’s big storyline. Still, I didn’t know who she was.

And there was BIG LOVE, where she is one of Bill Paxton’s daughters. Another great show.

It took a little film called NINE LIVES, a multi storyline film from 2004, that made me notice her. This is an excellent film if you haven’t seen it. Highly underrated and worth looking for. Even with a cast that included Sissy Spacek, Holly Hunter, Robin Wright, and Glenn Close, she stood out.

I then realized how good of an actress she is. NINE LIVES was her first real chance to “act” (although arguably the comedy in MEAN GIRLS was a lot more difficult).

Since that film, I knew her name, and I knew how to spell it.

And now it looks like this Friday, more people may become aware of her as she stars in MAMMA MIA. Even though it opens opposite THE DARK KNIGHT, it should serve as good counter-programming for the rest of the summer.

There is one troubling thing to come from this film:

They have released this video of her singing.

Nothing against her voice, which is pretty good, but we all know what happened to her MEAN GIRLS co-star Lindsay Lohan when she thought she would have a music career. It led to her downfall.

In the current Entertainment Weekly, Amanda is profiled and she said she doesn’t want a future in music. That is good to read.

Her next film is co-starring in JENNIFER’S BODY, the next film from Diablo Cody. And let’s not forget about BIG LOVE which hopefully will be back one of these days.
