Recently, Diablo Cody programmed her own film festival at the New Beverly Theatre in Los Angeles. Piper at the Lazy Eye Theatre came up with the idea to turn this into a Meme. Piper tagged Burbanked, and Burbanked tagged me.
After Diablo’s list was announced, I have to admit thinking the same thing. What would I program if I had my own festival? So, this was a great idea.
Many different ideas came to me. Should I go decade by decade, showing my favorite films of each era? From the 20’s to today? Should I have it all Forgotten Films? Or have it focused on “What Ever Happened To” stars?
I decided to go a different way.
All 1980’s.
Here is my schedule. Each film will play for two nights. Times are 7:00 PM for the first, 10:00 PM for the second feature.
Tuesday - The Musicals of the 1980’s
GREASE 2 - ”C’mon everybody gather round”, the fest begins with one of my faves. I will try to get some special guest stars (we are in talks with Michelle, and there is a possibility she will be in attendance).
BREAKIN / BREAKIN 2: ELECTRIC BOOGALOO - Special double feature presentation of both films. Lucinda Dickey will be there for a Q&A along with “Boogaloo Shrimp”. We will have cardboard in the lobby for you to do your best breakin moves. The winner gets an autographed photo of “Shabba-Doo” (who will be at a wedding and won't be able to make it).
Thursday - A Tribute to Chevy
SEEMS LIKE OLD TIMES - CADDYSHACK may be the logical choice for a Chevy Chase film festival, but this Neil Simon throwback to the screwball comedies of the 1930’s doesn’t quite get the exposure it should. I think I like it even more.
NATIONAL LAMPOON’S VACATION - Sure, it is on TV all the time, but it really deserves to be seen on the big screen.
Friday - Forgotten Films
T.A.G.: THE ASSASSINATION GAME - A brand new 35mm print has been found, the only one now in existence. We will have a reunion of the entire cast, including Forest Whitaker (who made his film debut in a nonspeaking role). Rubber dart guns will be given out to the first 100 patrons.
MAD MAGAZINE PRESENTS UP THE ACADEMY - The original version, with all the MAD and Alfred E. Neuman references will be shown. We will have a discussion with Ron Leibman to see why he had his name taken off the film. Representatives from Mad Magazine will also be in attendance to see just why they took their name off as well.
Sunday - Going To Another Dimension
JAWS 3- D - Even though it is frequently shown in the standard version, the original 3-D version will be shown.
SPACEHUNTER: ADVENTURES IN THE FORBIDDEN ZONE / METALSTORM: THE DESTRUCTION OF JARRED SYN - A double feature, mainly because no one remembers which film was which.
Tuesday - Modern Classics
LOCAL HERO - The Bill Forsyth classic, and one of the decades very best. Come early for our very own celidh.
THE STUNTMAN - Peter O’Toole at his wildest. One of the studios will be donating a crane for use so we can all “take a ride on Eli’s killer crane”.
Thursday - Back To School
HOW I GOT INTO COLLEGE - BETTER OFF DEAD has recently been shown in LA with Diane Franklin in attendance, so we decided to go with this lesser known Savage Steve Holland film.
CAN’T BUY ME LOVE - We will close off the fest with the ultimate 1980’s movie. We are still in negotiations, but we may have a very special guest star.
I hope to see you all there!
Normally at this time I would tag 5 others. Since I don’t know who got tagged and who didn’t, if you are reading this and were not tagged by someone, and want to write something, consider yourself tagged.

Ha! Arrange for me to meet Lucinda, and I'm there!
Z, make your dream a reality. The New Bev's currently holding a raffle -- $5 per ticket, and the winner gets to schedule their own double feature. I'm sure they'll accept mail-ins!
Grease 2 - course
Breakin' is nice.
I think a Seems Like Old Times and Foul Play double would be good.
And holy shit, Metalstorm 3D, where the hell did that come from. I haven't seen that forever.
