Here are the DVD releases for Tuesday July 1, 2008
SEX AND DEATH 101 - Winona Ryder in a dark comedy from writer / director Dan Waters. Since Waters wrote HEATHERS (one of my faves), I was hoping to see this theatrically. But, it was barely released.
HEATHERS: 20TH ANNIVERSARY - A new version of the classic film. I actually have two copies of the original DVD release. The first version died a few months after buying (as many early Anchor Bay titles did). I may just have to get copy number three.
DRILLBIT TAYLOR - Owen Wilson as a bodyguard to a group of high school students. You would think the studio would have played up the fact that it was written by Judd Apatow from an original screenplay by John Hughes.
VANTAGE POINT - The multi perspective political thriller with Dennis Quaid, Forest Whitaker and more.
WHERE THE LIGHT IS: JOHN MAYER LIVE IN LOS ANGELES - Insert John Mayer joke here.
TYLER PERRY'S MEET THE BROWNS - One of many Tyler Perry DVDs being released this week, including his TV series HOUSE OF PAYNE
MY BLUEBERRY NIGHTS - Wong Kar Wai's film that didn't do too well at theatres, despite a pretty good cast (Jude Law, Natalie Portman, Norah Jones).
MAD MEN: SEASON ONE - The acclaimed AMC series that I have yet to see. I plan to catch up on DVD.
MISHIMA - Criterion is releasing the Paul Schrader film as well as another MISHIMA film, PATRIOTISM
SERIAL - The 1980 film with Martin Mull and Tuesday Weld.
BABY IT'S YOU - Arguably John Sayles most accessible film with Rosanna Arquette as a college student. GREAT film.
PARTNERS - Straight cop Ryan O'Neal teams up with gay cop John Hurt to infiltrate the gay community in this 1982 film, the only feature film directed by sitcom veteran James Burrows.
GET SMART'S BRUCE AND LLOYD OUT OF CONTROL - Direct to DVD film based on two characters in the new GET SMART feature film.
HURRICANE - The Mia Farrow version. Interesting, Roman Polanski was in pre-production for this when he fled the country, according to the recent documentary.
ARIA - At least the third rerelease of the opera anthology film featuring short films by Robert Altman, Jean-Luc Godard, Ken Russell and more.
DANIEL - Sidney Lumet's film with Timothy Hutton. I used to have this film on VHS when it was incredibly hard to find. I tried to sell it on Amazon. No one was interested. It is now less than worthless.
WON TON TON TON: THE DOG THAT SAVED HOLLYWOOD - The 1976 film.
FRENCH POSTCARDS - An early Debra Winger film about students in Paris.
TV ON DVD
CLOSER: SEASON THREE, 30 DAYS SEASON TWO, WALKER TEXAS RANGER SEASON FIVE, STREETS OF SAN FRANCISCO SEASON 2 Volume 1, TORI AND DEAN INN LOVE SEASON 1
