What Ever Happened To: Kristy McNichol

Kristy McNichol won two Emmys before she turned 20. She was a favorite actress for many growing up in the era. In a recent Biography episode, both George Clooney and Brad Pitt admitted having crushes on her. Yet, by the time she was 30, she was gone from TV and movie screens.

Living in LA, Kristy got into the industry early, appearing in commercials. This eventually led to a regular role on the TV series APPLE’S WAY, guest spots on TV series such as THE BIONIC WOMAN and STARSKY AND HUTCH, as well as Afterschool Specials.

In 1976 she got what is still her best known role, that of Buddy in FAMILY. This Aaron Spelling produced family drama that ran for 86 episodes between the years of 1976 and 1980 was a favorite for many (including myself). Kristy was nominated each year of the show’s run, and won it twice, for the first year in 1977 and again in 1979.

She starred in many TV movies of the 70’s such as SUMMER OF MY GERMAN SOLDIER, MY OLD MAN, and BLINDED BY THE LIGHT (with her brother Jimmy McNichol) but would also hit the big screen, playing Burt Reynold’s daughter in 1978’s THE END.

This being the 70’s, and being one of the biggest stars on TV, Kristy starred in several of the BATTLE OF THE NETWORK STARS, as well as CIRCUS OF THE STARS and THE LOVE BOAT. She and her brother even had a variety special of their own. Completely forgotten it seems (it doesn’t even appear on the IMDB) I remember loving it, with guest stars liked Conrad Bain of DIFF’RENT STROKES. Someone please issue this on DVD!

As FAMILY continued to run, the producers were afraid that Kristy would walk because of her increasing popularity, and she felt pressure from her family to earn more money. They brought on Quinn Cummings as a younger family member in case she left. But, Kristy stayed through the run of the show.

1980 saw the release of LITTLE DARLINGS. This summer camp comedy co-starring Tatum O’Neal and Matt Dillon was a big hit, proving that she could be just as popular in feature films.

Unfortunately, her next few films weren’t as successful. THE NIGHT THE LIGHTS WENT OUT IN GEORGIA, while I enjoyed parts of it (I wrote about it here), wasn’t a box office smash.

Here is a very nice performance by Kristy from THE NIGHT THE LIGHTS WENT OUT IN GEORGIA, "I Need You Strong For Me"

Neil Simon’s ONLY WHEN I LAUGH was well received by critics, but not as much by audiences.

Disaster struck with her next two films.

Paramount was set to release her film WHITE DOG. Starring Burl Ives and Paul Winfield, Kristy played an actress, who adopts a dog, only to find out that it was trained to attack African Americans. Directed by Sam Fuller (and co-written by Curtis Hanson) the film was attacked by groups as being racist when in fact it was an anti-racism film. So controversial, the studio never released it. It has appeared on cable over the years (even on Lifetime of all channels) and is a very good film. Criterion should be releasing it on DVD in the near future. (EDIT: They have and you can read my review here.)

After WHITE DOG, Kristy starred with BLUE LAGOON’S Christopher Atkins in the big musical THE PIRATE MOVIE. Reviews were terrible. It does have a sort of cult following now. But then again, so do most 80’s movies.

It was during the making of JUST THE WAY YOU ARE, a romantic comedy, that more serious problems occurred. She had a breakdown of sorts in the middle of filming and shooting was called off. It came out that she was manic-depressive / bi polar. She was eventually able to finish the film, but it wasn’t very well received.

The next few years had little of note as far as film work. There was Alan Pakula’s misfire DREAM LOVER, a TV movie WOMEN OF VALOR and a small role in a comedy called YOU CAN’T HURRY LOVE.

Her one notable film from this period was a wild and very funny cameo in TWO MOON JUNCTION. Playing a truck driver, it was a whole different side of her.

She was eventually lured back to episodic TV with EMPTY NEST in 1988. The GOLDEN GIRLS spin-off with Richard Mulligan and Dinah Manoff was a ratings hit. She remained on the show until 1992. She did return for the 1995 series finale.

After EMPTY NEST, she has stayed away from both film and TV. Other than voicing a couple of animated cartoons, 1997’s EXTREME GHOSTBUSTERS and a WB cartoon INVASION AMERICA in 1998, she has left the industry.

So, What Ever Happened To Her?

Kristy was never really happy in the limelight. There was intense pressure from her family, where she essentially had to support them.

In the 1980’s, she often found herself taking side jobs. For a while, she acted as a real estate appraiser. She didn’t need the money, but found a satisfaction in the work, in doing her own thing and setting her own hours. She also worked as a hair stylist.

In recent years, she has spent most of her time doing charity work.

Her last public statement was in 2001:

"A lot of people have wondered what I've been up to. I retired from my career after 24 years. My feeling was that it was time to play my biggest part — MYSELF! I must say that it has been the best thing that ever happened to me. So many fans are disappointed that I'm not currently acting, however some may not realize that the process I'm in at this time is necessary and vital for my personal happiness and well-being."

She also appeared at a 2007 autograph show in California.

Kristy was always a favorite of mine. While I would welcome a return to the screen from her, I also hope that she is doing well. From all reports, she is.

I really do miss Kristy. I'm 40 years old and was remembering what a cruch I had on her when I was young. She was such a beautiful young woman. I'm sure she is just as beautiful as a mid-aged woman. If you happen to read this Kristy... If you can find it in our heart to make another movie, I would sure appreciate it. I'm no longer "in love" with Kristy, but I really thought she was a great actress.

My husband and I watched Pirate Movie last night. What a wonderful respite from today's pressures...to see a girl that I grew up with (on tv of course). Kristy, if you read this, I wish you the absolute best! You brought so much joy into the lives of so many...I always wanted to be just like you! We love all your movies.

Hi - 9/11/08 Kristy McNichol turns 46. This is to update on a few things I've been able to confirm about what happened to answer the theme of this blog. Most importantly, it appears her life is completely back to normal and she is totally out of the celebrity picture. Kristy did try to get a spot on Dancing with the Stars but the 70's theme was decided against by the producers.

Kristy lives in Sherman Oaks after she sold her million dollar mansion on Weddington to Marlon Brando in 1992. The reason they sold the mansion is her mother had blown most of Kristy's earnings from films. They're a close family and her mother blew $4,000,000 and the IRS came looking for her in millions in back taxes. The entire family lives a very modest middle class lifestyle today. Her brother James is in the middle of selling a nice home in Santa Barbara. It's on Zillow right now.

Nothing more really to know about the McNichol's except their glorious past. Kristy will remain a mysterious figure because she isn't married, has no children and seems to hide out a lot in her house in Sherman Oaks. There is rarely any news of her speaking with anyone in public other than autograph events. She must live a strange kind of life to say the least, but no one can really blame her. We all understand what she's been through.

I was able to obtain this info because I have a Lexis/Nexis account.

I'm really excited Criterion will be releasing one of their superb DVDs to WHITE DOG in December-I haven't seen this film for years since it was hard to come by even then, but I remember Kristy gives an excllent performance.
I wish Kristy the absolute best always & hope she has found the happiness she richly deserves.

McNichol does not have a financial problem. The rumor of her mother "blowing" much of the money is untrue, as is the rumor of a large IRS debt. McNichol invested her money wisely. If she works, it's because she wants to. She doesn't need the money.

I have been a fan of Kristy's since
she was on Family. She was a great role model for girls because she showed spunk, gumption and conviction in her beliefs. Why I'm writing this is to say that Jonathan Taylor Thomas of Home Improvement looks so much like her. If she did a remake of Only When I Laugh, she could be the mother and instead of a daughter, she could have a son and he could play that part. If you could computer generate photos of Kristy and Jonathan, she at 14 and he at 12, you'll see what I mean. If they did a Family Reunion he could play Buddy's son.

I didn't see anything about her on the tv series about the girls living together with a house mother. Forgive me for not coming up with the name of it right now. George Clooney had a small part for a few episodes on it.

That was "Facts of Life" but Kristy wasn't in it. I love everything she's ever been in and I hope that she is doing well.

Chris,
I wish Kristy was back on television or back on the screen,I have had a crush on her since I saw Little Darling when I was eight. It is funny to have a crush on someone you have never met or probably never will.To me,I still think she is gorgious despite she is ten years older than me.She also did a great job in the show Family and the movie Just the Way You Are,she does great in whatever she does on screen.A talented young lady with a smile that sparkle!I hope she doing well!

Chris Roth said...

Where do I start? I am sure Kristy will never read this, though could be wrong, she still looks just a beautiful when she did Little Darling, now that is how I feel,I had a crush on her though out the 80's like most guys did.Hate she had to leave behind her career, though I clearly understand why based on what I read. She did the right thing, though I would be estastic if she did another movie,I would see it in a minute, funny though how you can have a crush on someone you will probably never know.Kristy if you read this I still think you're the most beautiful young lady that was ever on screen.I am sure I have a lot of guys that would agree with me on this! Kristy hope you are doing g-r-e-a-t!!!!

Does anyone at this site see the resemblence of Kristy to Jonathan Taylor Thomas? Anyone at all please give me your feedback.

I too had the biggest crush on Kristy. I have always wished the best for her, and saw when her brother was being interviewed about her and informed the world that she was bi-polar. But the disease is treatable, and I am sure she has been treated and is just fine. Knowing that she is still unmarried, still gives me hope.... :-) I am as big a fan of hers as anyone I know..and this has been going on for a long time. Funny I see she was born on 9/11, which is also my son's birthday..and of course, one of the worst days in American History, not no fault of hers of course....I hope one day I can run into her or catch one of her autograph signings....how I wish she would do one more show/film or make a public appearance. I would bet my last dollar, she is still gorgeous.

Susan I totally agree with you.

Kristy along with Molly Ringwald were my favorite actresses growing up. Don't remember the movies much, but loved Family

Kristy McNichol was the whole reason I chose my career path of getting into the film industry. Little Darlings was my favorite movie, and still is! Kristy's range in the film was performed so perfectly I actually felt a connection to her character. I have two family members who are bi-polar. I have seen how difficult life can be for them and I really wish with all my heart Kristy's life is going the way she has hoped now. If you ever read this comment, thank you for giving the world such an amazing performance in your roles and the inspiration and energy you create. Kris Butler.

I was a huge fan of Kristy's when I was a little girl in the 70's. She was my favorite actress. My name is Kristy too and as a little girl that was so cool for me to have the same name with such a pretty and talented actress! Best wishes to Kristy!

I liked the movie "Little Darlings." That is how I remember Kristy McNichol. I for one applaud her for leaving the industry so she could have a more fulfilling life. Too many people in Hollywood don't take the high road and they end up strung out on drugs. Fame is not all its cracked up to be. Good for you Kristy. May you have a long and healthy life.

Kristy use to come into the Bob's big boy on VanNuys Blvd(No longer there)in the early 80's. She use to come in about once a month to get the famous HOT FuDGE Cake. She would get it to go. I made it and served it to her several times. She was always real nice and tipped. Maybe she goes to the one in Burbank,CA where i once served the legend Bob Hope.
