What Ever Happened To: Jill Schoelen

Jill Schoelen never really became an A-list movie star. Yet, for a while, she was big in video stores. She starred in countless films that, while they may have gotten some theatrical exposure, were much bigger on video. But, she was gone from the scene by the time DVD was released.

Jill, the daughter of fashion designer Deborah Schoelen, began in TV, acting in episodes of LITTLE HOUSE ON THE PRAIRIE and T.J. HOOKER. She also appeared in commercials, like this one for Coty Wild Musk. (It is the first on the clip)

There were several feature films in the early 80’s, including the classic Mr. T film D.C. CAB, HOT MOVES, 1985’s THUNDER ALLEY (with Leif Garret) and the Emilio Estevez film THAT WAS THEN, THIS IS NOW which was quite good. For TV she made Wes Craven’s CHILLER, the Martin Sheen alcoholism drama SHATTERED SPIRITS, and BABES IN TOYLAND (with Keanu Reeves who she is said to have been involved with and Drew Barrymore).

1987 was her breakthrough year. She had a small role in the excellent Judd Nelson TV miniseries BILLIONAIRE BOYS CLUB (which needs a DVD release). But then she found the genre that would suit her the best, horror.

In THE STEPFATHER, she played the daughter of a woman who marries the title character, Terry O’Quinn (now on LOST). Jill begins to believe that he isn’t who he appears to be, and she is right. The film still isn’t on DVD, and is constantly requested on various DVD boards. Very memorable film with O’Quinn giving an excellent performance (“Who am I here?”).

Jill went on to star in many more horror films. There was CURSE 2: THE BITE, CUTTING CLASS (with Brad Pitt, who she was engaged to after filming), THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA (with Robert Englund as the Phantom), POPCORN, and WHEN A STRANGER CALLS BACK.

She moved away from horror for roles in MURDER SHE WROTE (yet another actress in this series to disappear soon after appearing on it) and THE HEIGHTS. And, she played the lead in 1991’s RICH GIRL.

Her last major film was 1994’s THERE GOES MY BABY. Set in 1965, while the film isn’t bad, it is best known today for its cast of once and future stars, including Ricky Schroeder, Noah Wylie, Dermot Mulroney, Lucy Deakins, and even Mark Ruffalo had a very small early role in it.

In 1995, after making an independent film called NOT AGAIN (that doesn’t appear to have had much distribution) she disappeared.

So, what ever happened to her?

In 1993, Jill married film composer Anthony Marinelli. Marinelli has composed the scores for many films over the years, including YOUNG GUNS, GRAVEYARD SHIFT, 2 DAYS IN THE VALLEY, TIME CODE, 15 MINUTES and many more.

They have two children.

In 2004, Jill appeared in a short film called SHE KEPT SILENT. But, nothing seems to have happened with it.

It goes to show how fame can be fleeting. In many of her films, she was top billed ahead of her co-stars. Now, years later, she is essentially retired, only to see that her co-stars, like Brad Pitt and Keanu Reeves, are big stars.

Jill went from starring in films, to not making them entirely. There wasn't even a gradual decline to co-starring roles. She just wasn't making any. So, it must have been her choice.

I was always a fan of hers. Heck, I even had RICH GIRL on laserdisc. Maybe they can finally get around to releasing some of her films on DVD and have her do a commentary track.

Wow, nice Coty commercial. I recall seeing that when I was younger, but didn't realize that was Jill Schoelen. Excellent flash from the past.

I really enjoy any films Jill Schoelen was in. I remember watching most of her films when I was in high school. I really liked POPCORN and When a stanger calls back. I hope that maybe she will make a small comeback in a smaller role. I think Jill Schoelen is an underated actress.

Jill is one of my all time favorite actresses and I adore Rich Girl (there, I said it!). She was indeed underrated.

I read somewhere that Brad Pitt said she was the only woman who broke his heart. I believe him.

She does not work and no one can tolerate her. For the same reasons, she is divorced and does not primarily raise her kids. That is what happened to her put nicely.

Do tell anonymous. If you know more about her off screen, please share. Otherwise, it just sounds like sour grapes.

lol! sour grapes ya. Well, thats about right. If you know her, its sour grapes for you. You of course are smart enough to unerstand that movies are make believe and are filmed on a set. the people are real life people not the actors you see on screen. In this case, she is one of those people who contribute more bad to the world than good. I think there are few worse things that can be said about a person. Thats all you need to know. Just sour grapes for you.

I'm not disputing what you are saying. I'm just saying give us something more concrete. Give some examples so we know where you are coming from.

well, why would I need examples when none of you know her so what evidence other than mine do you have? She does not spend much time with her kids so...what would be her reason for not working? No one could stand her and she cant finish anything. She has just wasted away the last 12 yrs doing nothing really since a few years before her divorce in 2000.

I have personally known Jill Schoelen for the past 35 years. Whoever is posting these extremely negative and UNTRUE allegations is obviously just bitter and jealous.
Jill is a great mother, loyal firend and a person of love and generousity.
"Whatever happened to Jill Schoelen" is this: She choose her family over her career and continues to this day to be creative and is currently recording a jazz album.
Only a coward would post such allegations under the name "anonymous".

Thank you for that Kathleen.

And if you have an more info on the jazz album, keep me posted and I will update the story.

Yes, well said Kathleen. And yes, please keep us posted on the jazz CD. She's still got lots of fans out there. - Charlie

well, she is so beautiful. I saw hert movie just now - cutting glass. Good movie and beautiful, talented actress. Well, time passes so quickly, I remember 1989 too. young and handsome was I. The face changes and so does the body.
But exrecise and good healthy habits maintain almost the same look.

I will not comment about Jills friends, but I can write this, it sickens me to read these things written about a not so good human being. Sickens me. To anyone who can admit the truth and is a good human being, it should sicken them too. I made a mistake to ever comment on Jill because I know her and I never want to be that kind of person. Call me a coward, whatever...I would rather be called that and wake up knowing that I am a good human being and rest my head peacefully at night. Only the truth offends. I make my point.
