Back in the early 80’s, there was one actor who looked to have a great future ahead of him. That was Chris Makepeace.
The Canadian actor began his career playing “Rudy the Rabbit” in the Bill Murray classic MEATBALLS (a special edition DVD is being released next week).
His next film MY BODYGUARD. As the new kid in school, who clashes with bully Matt Dillon (in still one of his best performances) he goes on to hire Adam Baldwin for protection. A great film and a great role.
Next up was THE LAST CHASE. I’ve been meaning to do a full write-up of this one as part of my NOT ON DVD feature since I recently was able to find a VHS copy. In this, he and Lee Majors drove around in a sports car, in a future world where gas is scarce. (EDIT: You can read my review of THE LAST CHASE here)
But then the roles got smaller. Rather than the leads, he had smaller roles in MAZES AND MONSTERS (the anti Dungeons and Dragons film with Tom Hanks), THE TERRY FOX STORY, and FALCON AND THE SNOWMAN.
He played the lead in 1986’s VAMP, and ALOHA SUMMER in 1988. In the nineties, he only has four credits, nothing anyone has heard of. And there is a minor role in a 2001 Canadian film. That is his last credit.
So, what ever happened to him?
While I’ve been unable to find anything official about him, according to some credits on the internet, he moved behind the camera. In the early 2000’s, he began acting as assistant director and producer in several Canadian productions. There is a 2006 credit as “construction producer” of a Canadian show called HANDYMAN SUPERSTAR CHALLENGE.
I don't know if this was just a case of him not wanting stardom, but he was a good actor. He probably could have had a bigger career if he wanted to. It could be that he wanted to stay behind the camera.
UPDATE: 6-9-07 Chris appears in the documentaries on the new MEATBALLS Special Edition DVD. He is interviewed about the making of the film. So, he is still out there. It looks like he was interviewed in a video editing studio, making the rumors of his postproduction work seem true. He has a lot of great stories about the making of the film, so for fans, it is worth watching the DVD.

I've seen his name often in credits of HGTV Canada so he works on shows behind the scenes, not as a director or producer but one of those jobs where you don't know exactly what they do.
Tarantino needs to cast him in something, the way he does with other quirky 70s and 80s actors. Makepeace has the same down to earth qualities that made Jackie Earl Haley so watchable.
I recently saw Chris Makepeace in the 1996 movie "A Holiday for Love". He resembled a very young Mel Gibson.
He was in all of the movies below:

Thanks for the info about Makepeace. I always thought he was a good actor with a bright future. But I suppose he chose the future he wanted so good for him. On an aside, I thought if they ever made a movie about late singer Harry Chapin, Makepeace would have been ideal for the role because of profile and hair.
Chris Makepeace is still so cute! I had such a crush on him in the 80's. Love Him!
Chris Makepeace is still so cute!!!
chris makepeace is a great actor i wish he would come back to the front of the camera, if only one more time , good luck chris with everything you do, p.s your still HOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOVE YA MICHELLE
He came into the bar I worked at in Toronto one day in about 1990. Signed a couple autographs. I've always wondered what happened to his career. Nice guy.
I know that Chris Makepeace has very good talent, I watch My Bodyguard all the time, seen his other movie as well.I was hoping that he would continue acting.I don't care how old he is now, but he should be encouraged to act some more. Why waste his talent behind the scenes instead in front of a camera?
I don't know if anyone saw him in Captive Hearts starring the late Pat Morita. I just happened on it on a friend's VHS collection. Got me a copy on Amazon.com. I thought he was just so handsome in his role.
im related to him! my great grandads cousin is chris dad.
Too bad Kerry-related-to-Chris couldn't give us more information about him. I'd love someone to interview him about what he did in the '90s and what led him to his current career track. And would he ever consider doing a cameo on an episode of Law and Order or something?
I just re-watched My Bodyguard last night. I haven't seen that flick in 25 or so years and I wanted my kids to see it. They loved it. It's a film that actually holds up. I, too, wondered what had happened to Chris and Googled him...which is how I ended up here.
Cool, too, to see Joan Cusack and Jennifer Beals in the movie...and of course we know what happened to Adam Baldwin and Matt Dillon. *g*
I first saw him on my BodyGuard and then the last which is my favorite forbidden love story... Captive Hearts. Not much folks have seen it. But it was a movie you hoped to have a sequel.
Has anyone every found out info on who his father is because when you look at him and watch his facial expressions in movies he looks a hell of a lot like Mel Gibson and that has had my interest for a long time.
One thing that Chris Makepeace is doing now is he is a talent scout for a record label. He signed the band Saliva.
