What Ever Happened to Diane Franklin?

Whenever I hear the song “Open Arms” by Journey, I think of Diane Franklin.

In the film LAST AMERICAN VIRGIN, that song plays at a crucial point of the film. She says two words (that I won’t give away for fear of spoiling the film), right as the music swells, that I think of whenever I hear the song. It shows the way that a movie can change the way you think of a song.

Diana Franklin was one of the more popular 80’s actresses. While she may not have become a household name, she appeared in several still classic films. And yet, by the end of the decade, she had essentially disappeared from acting.

She started doing commercials, and then made her film debut it THE LAST AMERICAN VIRGIN.

And what a debut it was. Diane played Karen, the object of affection of the lead character, Gary. Only, she starts dating his best friend.

It is difficult to call it a great film. There are parts that are just terrible by even teen comedy standards.

Yet, there are other parts that are among the greatest of any film.

VIRGIN has one of the greatest soundtracks of any 80’s film. It is filled with hit songs by U2, the Police, the Cars, REO Speedwagon, Journey, Lionel Ritchie, and many more. Songs that you still hear on the radio today. And, is uses them so well you have the feeling that the songs were picked first and they wrote the film around them. The film plays like a collection of music videos acted out.

And then there is the ending. I won’t give it away, but it has one of the single most depressing endings you are likely to see. It really has to be seen to be believed. I’ve often wondered if the ending triggered any suicides in the audience, it is that hard to watch. Yet, it is also probably a realistic ending. But then, as the credits roll, and you are in disbelief that the film just ended that way, there is a reprise of the theme song “Teen Angel Eyes” by Tommy Tutone (available for a free download at the band’s website) and all is right with the world.

The film still is popular today because of these elements, and was recently reissued on DVD.

Diane would go on to star in AMITYVILLE II: THE POSSESSION. One of the uglier films of the decade, there was a whole subplot with her and her brother that I won’t remind you of.

She made a few TV films, and TV episodes, before starring in 1984’s SECOND TIME LUCKY. While it is available on DVD, LUCKY is one of her more forgotten films. She plays several characters (including Eve in the Garden of Eden, the element of the film that the filmmakers sold the film by).

In 1985, she made the film that is probably still today her most loved. Still one of the funniest, most original films of the decade. A little film called BETTER OFF DEAD. Diane played Monique, the French foreign exchange student, who was staying with John Cusack’s neighbor Ricky, and being forced to communicate in the international language of love.

Man, I loved this movie. And how could you not? Who doesn't still quote the "I want my two dollars!" line?

There were several TV episodes that followed (CHARLES IN CHARGE, MATLOCK), a pretty awful film called TERRORVISION, and a small role in yet another cult classic BILL AND TED’S EXCELLENT ADVENTURE (although, I’m not part of that cult).

I am a part of the cult who loved her final theatrical film, BETTER OFF DEAD director Savage Steve Holland’s HOW I GOT INTO COLLEGE. Maybe because it came out in 1989 as I was going through the college application process. Diane had a very small role as the lead characters stepmother.

There were a few roles after that, episodes of MURDER SHE WROTE, PROVIDENCE (the last time I saw her), and FAMILY LAW.

But, then she retired.

So, what happened to her?

Unlike many other stories, it looks like she did have a happy ending.

According to her “official fan site” (that hasn’t been updated in a few years), she is happily married and raising her kids. She is happy with her life.

On the site, she speculates how she was one of the finalists for a role in AMADEUS and wonders what would have happened to her career if she got the part. In all honesty, I think BETTER OFF DEAD was a better choice. John Cusack is one of the big stars of today, and Tom Hulce is, well, a candidate for a future What Ever Happened to column. Not that it wasn’t a great film, but I think BETTER OF DEAD is watched more today than AMADEUS.

Also on her site, there is a recent photo of her.

She still looks great.

The IMDB lists a 2006 independent film that she had a role in. I never heard of it, and it doesn’t look like it is on DVD, but it looks like she may be getting back into the industry.

That is a great thing to read.

A good buddy of mine swore by this film for years, describing how he and a group of friends saw it in the theater when it was first released and how the film seemed to speak to each of them and their experiences. He searched for this movie for years (before the advent of a fresh DVD release last year!)and even made me a copy of the soundtrack, proclaiming it the best soundtrack ever! While I don't know about that claim, the movie is pretty damn good. I sat down to watch a copy of it late last year and, yes, that ending is one of the most depressing I've ever seen, but somehow kinda right. I can think of films like "Beautiful Girls", "Kicking and Screaming" and "Swingers" that feel like autobiographies of my life- films that feature characters just like people I've known, placing people in the EXACT same situations I've been in, and having the same conversations I've had. Those films feel so right to me, so, depressing ending or not, I could see how "The Last American Virgin" spoke to this group of young guys when it was released back in the day. That's the real magic of movies.

That is very true.

Man,

You're really getting me with this column.

You're hitting the right person too. Someone deep in the subconscious that you had forgotten or thought you had forgotten. And then BAM there they are again.

"He had his testicles all over me."

I love this woman.

A bigger story is whatever happened to Savage Steve Holland?

Better Off Dead, One Crazy Summer, How I got into College and then what?

Stay tuned Piper. I haven't forgotten Savage Steve, and have an answer.

The last time I saw Diane Franklin on TV was her appearance on THE PEOPLE'S COURT, probably around 1900 or so. Her last name at that time was DeLaruentiis, and she was taking someone to court over a stain that was not removed from a rug properly.

Glad I could share that tidbit.

truth be told, she was a very minor actress known for basically 1film (LAV). She had a minor role in the film, was cute and a run of the mill actress. Just another example of a reach to worship a movie star.

After reading this, I finally watched Last American Virgin. I then realized I had started to watch it on cable over 20 years ago, but when the penis measuring contest started, I said, "That's REALLY creepy and disturbing," and turned it off.

This is like two different movies though. The first half is your crazy zany antics with the guys trying to get laid, and there are actually a few good laughs. But even though they're going for comedy, there's a lot of honesty and emotion there. Here are a bunch of horndogs trying to get laid, trying to act cooler than they feel inside, but there's always that fear and nervousness.

There is that one distinct point though where the movie turns, and it turns really dark, and it has possibly the unhappiest and darkest ending of any movie I've ever seen, not just for a comedy. Yeah, it's honest -- perhaps too honest. The ending will stay with you for a long time.

i grew up knowing diane, through nora kovach's ballet classes in plainview new york. i remember when we both started our "modeling" careers, i think she was doing print ads for sears (correct me if i'm wrong diane). i am so impressed with her amazing career! i have seen her appear in so many venues, it just keeps amazing me! i would love to say hi and talk about our childhood. i wonder how i can reconnect with her?

I met Diane a couple of years ago at a kid's acting class. Normally when I see celebs I let it go, because those encounters can be awkward if not altogether crappy. But she was so friendly (and still so very cute),I had to pay my respects.
"Diane, could you do me a favor?"
"Sure"
"Could you just say 'Dodger Stadium' for me just once?"
Up until that point, I don't think she knew I recognized her. She completely lit up and did the french accent. We chatted for a second, and I walked away with a smile I'll keep forever. Wonderful woman.

I remember Diane most from Amityville II: The Posession and was devestated when she was killed! Bring her back. It's great to see that she's still acting.

I loved this film as a boy growing up, and often referred to it as the movie that changed my life or at least as a boy. It really changed how I looked at the world at 7, and as funny as that age sounds, true. I don't know if it was just the young boy with a crush on Diane Franklin, or the strong macho male model character lead by Steve Antin that really showed me that the characters in the movies, let a lone real life are not always what they seem. Even more funny as a boy with the ladies, I ended up more like the Gary the part played by Lawrence Monoson :( lmfao
The point I'm making is this posted blog really reminds me so much of how I felt about the movie, or how I would always ask if someone knew the movie. That was one of my funny ways of trying to connect with people I had just met "by asking what films influenced them or opened their eyes as kids", and if they ever seen "Last American Virgin" and I think maybe to this day I have met 1 that knew the movie Last American Virgin, but they all know better off dead. I have just recently added this movie to my collection of "nostalgic to me flicks" and was looking to see what ever happened to Diane Franklin and came across this site, and was again pleasantly surprised to read the comments from Joseph and Dave martin, esp; the part Dave mentioned about how the end stays with you for such a long time, I also loved Diane's character, sexy, vulnerable, a little naive, a young girl who needed her night in shining armor, got it, then ditched him for the knight that gave her the brush off :( but she is definitely a beautiful and I'm sure almost every boys crush like Phoebe Cates was in the 80's. Anyways, I loved the post, it touched home, and would recommend the film for anyone who grew up in the 80's, it's still entertaining :)

Last American Virgin was certainly (at least for me) a movie that changed my way of viewing women. Not in a bad way, but more along the lines of, "I will not be that guy". And of course there was the trying to get rid of the crabs situation LOL!!! I was very young,(perhaps 9 or 10yrs old) when I snook a VHS copy of this film from my older cousins and sat down to watch it from start to end. It was certainly one of those end of innocence moments for me....for lack of a better cliche.

Virgin was one of my first naked movies that I wasn't supposed to be watching and I love Better Off Dead. I have both DVDs.
