In the summer of 1987, what still stands as the best of the 1980’s high school films was released, CAN’T BUY ME LOVE. Rather than the sort of fairy tale John Hughes films, CAN’T BUY ME LOVE was a very realistic look at 80’s high school life.
Today, it is best known as the film that GREY’S ANATOMY star Patrick Dempsey starred in, back before he was a heartthrob. But back then, most critics didn’t even pay attention to him in the film. The person that they singled out for praise was his female co-star, an actress by the name of Amanda Peterson.
By 1987, I was already a big fan of Amanda. Having read an interview with her in Starlog magazine to promote EXPLORERS in 1985, I was instantly a fan. Here was this beautiful actress, who was the same age as me! How cool was that? So, I began to follow her career.
She began as a child star. She was one of the orphans in the film version of ANNIE. If you watch it today, you can see her very clearly in the “Hard Knock Life” musical number. She even has a solo during “Sandy”.
She then did a lot of TV work, even playing Ricky’s girlfriend in a first season episode of SILVER SPOONS. She was a regular on a short-lived series called BOONE (which I never saw) and the daughter in the TV film BEST KEPT SECRETS with Patty Duke. The made for TV drama AND THE CHILDREN SHALL LEAD was an excellent story of the Civil Rights movement. It received frequent airings throughout the 80’s.
Then came EXPLORERS. Directed by Joe Dante, the film today is best known as introducing Ethan Hawke and River Phoenix. Amanda played the female lead.
Her next credit was one of her very best, the TV mini-series A YEAR IN THE LIFE. Starring Richard Kiley and Eva Marie Saint, the six hour film followed a Seattle family through a year, going through divorce and other family problems. It would go on to win the Emmy for Best Mini-series. Amanda played Sunny Sisk, daughter of a couple going through a divorce. Sarah Jessica Parker, who was closer in her career to SQUARE PEGS than to SEX AND THE CITY was also in the cast.
CAN’T BUY ME LOVE came out in the summer. Critics loved her performance even if they didn’t care for the film. But for any teen that saw it that summer, it was one of the genres best. Watching it first show of opening day, I felt I was watching a documentary about my high school.
Her career at that time was at its peak. She was to follow that up with an even better role, to continue to play Sunny Sisk in the TV series that evolved from A YEAR IN THE LIFE.
Unfortunately, even though critic’s loved the series, and Amanda ended up on the cover of TV Guide from it, the audiences was not there for it. It was cancelled after one season.
Then, there was a Roger Corman produced post-apocalyptic Romeo and Juliet film called THE LAWLESS LAND. A 1989 TV movie called LOVE AND BETRAYAL showed her as once again a daughter of a parent going through divorce.
Also in 1989, she co-starred in what would be her last big theatrical release, LISTEN TO ME. Starring Kirk Cameron and Jamie Gertz, this was an odd, overly earnest film about a college debating team. Amanda played Gertz’s friend and had a too small role.
She then appeared in a first season episode of DOOGIE HOWSER M.D. playing a blind girl, who falls for Doogie’s friend Vinny (Max Casella) only to break up with him when she regains her eyesight.
1990 saw her starring in FATAL CHARM. In this direct to cable film (that was credited to the pseudonym Alan Smithee) she begins writing to a serial killer (Christopher Atkins, her co-star in LISTEN TO ME) believing he is innocent. He then breaks out of prison to track her down. While not a great film, it wasn’t as bad as Smithee’s other films.
In 1991 she starred in another TV movie, HELL HATH NO FURY. Having only seen it once (I don’t know if it was ever shown again), I believe it was another woman in jeopardy film, starring Barbara Eden as Amanda’s mother.
After CAN’T BUY ME LOVE, the film that Amanda made that turns up on cable the most these days is I POSED FOR PLAYBOY (aka POSING ). This is shown on the Lifetime Movie Channel at least once a month. It tells the story of three women (Amanda, Lynda Carter, Michele Greene), each telling their story of how they posed for Playboy and how it changed their life. Amanda plays a college student, from a rich family, who did it to prove herself to everyone.
While not a good film, it is almost heartbreaking to watch it today. Amanda gives an amazing performance in it. Much of it is told as she looks into the camera, giving an interview about her character’s life. If you just watch her eyes, the little things she is doing, this is a real actress. She put more into creating this character than the writers did in writing the film.
In 1992 she appeared as the girlfriend of on of the lead characters in a short lived Hal Linden TV series called JACK’S PLACE. It doesn’t even merit a mention on her IMDB page, but it was a fairly memorable role.
Her last credit was 1995’s WINDRUNNER, a direct to video family film about a football player who receives coaching from the spirit of Jim Thorpe. Really! Despite being in her early 20’s, Amanda played a high school student once again. And, one of her co-stars, also playing a high schooler was Max Casella of DOOGIE HOWSER.
WINDRUNNER would be her final acting job.
After 15 years in the industry, Amanda walked away. Whether by choice, or if the jobs weren’t there, I don’t know. In fact, little is known about Amanda after this point.
The only known sighting of her was in the late 90’s, there was a big Hollywood autograph convention in Los Angeles and she was one of the stars signing. I didn’t attend, but did see a few autographs turn up on Ebay later on. So, she was there.
But, there is all sorts of speculation as to what happened to her. Not all of it positive.
The first story, and the one that I HOPE is the case is that she is happily married, with children, and living in Northern California. A few sites list this as the case.
But, then there are the other stories.
There is one Amanda Peterson fan page on the net. In the guest book are pages and pages of people writing about her, and how much they loved her work. Among them are several very sad, and rather disturbing stories about her life.
The basic storyline is that she returned to her hometown of Greeley Colorado where her father has been a well-known doctor for years. The stories involve all the former child star clichés of drug use, failed relationships, abuse, police involvement, even mental illness. Many of them cite names and dates. But, I don’t know what to believe.
All I do know is that Amanda was one of the best teen actresses of the 1980’s. Since she is the same age as Gwyneth Paltrow, and Amanda’s career came to an end just as Gwyneth’s was beginning, I always saw Gwyneth as having the career that Amanda should have had.
It would be fun to see Amanda turn up on an episode of GREY’S ANATOMY. But, that may be too much. Maybe she really did want to give it all up, and walk away from it all. I don’t know.
I do hope that wherever she is, and whatever her life is like, that she is ok. She was one of my favorite actresses of the 80's.

I was much younger when I saw "Can't Buy Me Love" in the theater (you don't want to know how much younger), but I still remember thinking how cool a movie it was. The image of Peterson's character in that suede, befringed suit comes to mind immediately.
Another actress from that era I always wondered about was Kerri Greene -- she had such a great look and had big roles in "Lucas" and "The Goonies," but could only find sporadic TV work after those.
Kerri Green! I had forgotten about her!
I just checked and apparently she retired to go to college and raise a family. She did a LAW AND ORDER a few years ago.
I'm working on a whole series of these. There are quite a few.
Amanda Peterson and I actually went to the same college (Middlebury College, in Vermont). She came in as a freshman when I was a junior, so we didn't travel in many of the same circles. But we both had ties to the theater department, so I met her a couple of times.
She acted in a couple of plays at Middlebury, turning in terriffic performances, naturally.
Very cool, Movieboy!
Around the time of THE LAWLESS LAND I read in an interview that she was going to be going to Middlebury. One of the last stories about her I read.
Good God.
My mind is a whirlwind with sudden flashbacks after seeing that poster and that woman.
Can't wait to see what's next.
I met someone who knew Amanda today. He spoke very highly of her, but it is unfortunately true that Amanda had some issues with drugs, and most likely still does. While I wish her the best, and loved her in Can't Buy Me Love, clearly there were issues with Hollywood that Amanda couldn't overcome, and perhaps leaving the biz may have saved her life. I hope I run into her someday, as I also live in Northern California. I wish her the very best.
Imust say that "Can't Buy Me Love" was one and still is my favorite movie. I believe it had to do with it being almost reralistic and the on screen connection between Patrick dempsey and amanda peterson.
I was really pleased to find this blog. As a teenager at the time I remember just how much of an impact the movie had on me.
My girlfriend (who is a few year's younger than me) asked me what I wanted for my Birthday the other day and I asked for a copy of Can't Buy me Love.
I don't think I'd want to relive my teens but I hope that I will be able to watch this classic movie with my girlfriend and perhaps she might see why this was such an important movie to me at the time.
Maybe Amanda might look herself up on this blog someday. Wishing you all the best wherever you are and whatever you are doing.

Yes, that Wikipedia entry has the "happy ending" to her career. But, with there being so much info about the other ending out there, who knows which to believe.
I hope that Wiki is true.
Here is a link to a webpage advertising that big autograph session she attended in 1999 (referenced above). It was the Rhino Retrofest and Amanda is incorrectly identified as being from "A Day (instead of Year) In the Life."
http://members.aol.com/ultraindy/JDouglas/retrofest99.htm
I'd love to know where she is and how she is. She was a real beauty.
I get really sad and nostaligic when I see this movie. I am 31 now, in 2007, and when this movie came out I was 11 yrs old. Whenever I catch the movie I can't help but wish I was 15 again. Getting older really sucks. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy life, but this movie was one of my favorites, and still is, and it reminds me that at my age and older, our best years are behind us. Life sucks in that regard, it really does.
I visited this site because I am watching the movie right now on my DVR, and I was curious to see that happened to Amanda Peterson. Patrick Dempsey has always been cool, I knew he would be back, and big again someday. By the way, his movie "Run" was incredible. Check that out if you haven't.
i sooooo loved cant buy me love - when i was a kid ... ( i had the real hots for amanda !!!!) i think we all would like to see her doing great and in another film soon .
Hello from Estonia!
I saw this movie when i was very young and now when my friend wanted me to get something for christmas i asked this movie and she found it from internet, so i was just watching it now and by curiosly typed Amanda Peterson name here and i was so pleased to read that this movie had touched their lives like mine. I ´am 33 now....
Thanks for the article. I remember going to see "Can't buy me love" when I was 13 years old - so good. And, I remember Amanda Peterson and instantly recognized her in "Annie". I'd only heard the "happy ending" stories about her life, so I really hope it's true. It's always sad to hear of young actors/actresses who fall into drugs, etc. I occasionally 'imdb' actors from the past and from there fell onto your blog - definitely will bookmark. Great stuff!
Can't buy me love. I was in High school when this movie came out. What memories. As I was going through a very awkward stage in adolescence at this time, I came to conclusion that paying the Hot cheerleader $1000 would have worked. Actually, I still think it would have worked. Amanda Peterson sure was HOT!
It is true. Friends of mine knew her in Hollywood in the early 90's and confirmed that she did have a heroin problem. Don't know if she ever kicked it, or what became of her, but that was most definitely the case around 1993. Sorry to tell you. I can only hope that she pulled it all together. Don't know anything past that point. I too had a major crush on her, and thought she was absolutely gorgeous and very talented.
Thanks for the lovely tribute. Wish I knew more about what she's doing now. Always fascinated by what people who used to be famous choose to do for a living, when most ordinary folks are out here wishing they were famous. Interesting!
Looks like she is selling real estate in Nor Cal.
Homes of Berkeley
The real estate agent isn't Amanda.
It does look kind of like her, but the agent's bio says she is a native Californian.
Amanda Peterson, the actress, is from Colorado.
around 2000 me and my friend took her home from the Armory in Greeley, CO because she was unable to drive herself home. I was a student at UNC and I was very shocked to see her in that condition. Nevertheless, she thanked me and was nice, I assume she is quietly living in Greeley right now. I know the apt. she lived in at that time, but stayed away and never spoke with her out of respect for her, and her boyfriend at the time. Hope you
are well today Amanda. I mean no disrespect for posting this.
it sure does look like her. either way, i wish her well.
Hi from Sweden!
In sweden we have shows that find out what old stars are doing now. When I read that no one really know what she is doing my question is why nobody in some TV shows or paper have tried to find out where Amanda is now.
I really love that movie and I would love to know what happend to her
I was born in 1985 so wasn't aware that Can't Buy Me Love even existed until the other night when I caught it on Cable. I thought that the only teen movies from the 80's all starred Molly Ringwald...fortunately for me i was incorrect. This is a TOP movie and I think that Amanda beats Molly any day of the week :)
Latest news (actually, rumors):
"As of this month, there are rumors that she is enrolled in the theater program at Colorado State University. As well as this, she is still registered with the Screen Actors Guild. This is the first news in over five years regarding the whereabouts of Amanda, and it gives us fans a little hope that one day, she'll return to the big screen."
http://80steenmovies.blogspot.com/2008/05/whatever-happened-to-amanda-peterson.html
There is an "Amanda Peterson" enrolled at Colorado State, but she is not a theatre major. Her major is Natural Sciences/Psychology. I'm not so sure that story is legit. :(
I think her full name is Phyllis Amanda Peterson.
36 LOS ANGELES, CA
VENICE, CA
GREELEY, CO
BURLINGTON, VT
These are the locations of where she lived with her name on it. The info shows her sister Anne Marie and also it gives a alias of Amanda A Peterson. It shows her siste is 41. I show her as Phyllis Peterson and her home address probably parents in Greely CO
I just watched her show last night and was wondering what ever happened to her. I am only a couple years older.
Peoplehunter
I saw Can't Buy me Love when it came out in 1987 and was truly amazed at Amanda's acting abilities and beauty. I was 24 at the time and had only seen a half dozen of the 80's teen high school movies. I found this one to be the best. Amanda..... if you are out there some where I must say your acting ability was superb and I hope your life has been blessed. I prayed for you then in 1987 for a good life and I recently saw this movie again so I have prayed for you again. Jesus is the answer to any & all problems in life.

I met Amanda one night in Burlington, Vt at Nectars in 1995 or 96, and quickly becames friends. Amanda is one of the coolest people I have ever known!! She just loved to hang and be low key. A typical day would be to play some Pitfall on her Sega, grab a Filet-O-Fish and go fourwheeling in her Pathfinder. She seemed to have no fear, and pretty much smiled constantly! She did have an apartment in Burlington on North Winooski ave. Everyone who knew her back then loved her. She has a ton of carisma. Guys would flock to her like bears on honey, it would get pretty comical. I feel pretty fortunate to have had the chance to get to know her. I really wish i knew what/how she is doing today. I haven't seen or spoken to her since 98'. Mandy if you ever read this, I miss you!! Maty H.
I wonder if this has anything to do with her?
http://www.mccookgazette.com/story/1042181.html
Probably not, as Amanda Peterson is a common name. Also, since her and her baby took the name Peterson, it's probably the dad's last name, but you never know...
Oh and also, at this site it actually states the names of her husband and kids, so it seems more accurate:
http://www.rottentomatoes.com/celebrity/amanda_peterson/biography.php
here's info about her "husband" David Hartley:
http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0366822/
http://www.amandahowardassociates.co.uk/Photo.asp?Client=DavidHartleyprev=/images%3Fq%3Ddavid%2Bhartley%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26client%3Dfirefox-a%26rls%3Dcom.ubuntu:en-US:unofficial%26sa%3DN
I don't think that the amanda howard associates.co.uk as a name has any significance. But yup, and apparently she has two kids, Jonathon and Katie.
That "David Hartley" story has been going around for a long time. Rotten Tomatoes lists the "happy ending" story that has been going around for years.
Although in reading that bio of him, it appears that he is based in London, and not living in Napa Valley as the bio states.
I don't know what the truth is.
I saw "Can't Buy Me Love" a couple of nights ago... and i can't agree more with moviezzz that Gwen Paltrow has the place that belongs to Amanda. Damn she was hot.
I remembered that back in those days every chic in my school looks like Cindy's clones. I'm from Guatemala and here that movie inspired "the ZCavaricci Trend".
Aside from what've happen to Amanda, "Can't Buy Me Love" is a trademark of the 80's... simple as that.
I can only expect that she's fine, and wish her all the happiness in the world.
This is the story of a girl
Who cried a river and drowned the whole world
And while she looked so sad in photographs
I absolutely love her
When she smiles
I found this article dated August 17, 2008
Mandy Peterson or more commonplace Amanda Peterson is famous for her tag ‘cant buy me love‘ which she sports on online features.
Her name is splashed across the web and she is really hot. She has won four awards and on her list are several things you need to know. She won Best Young Actress Starring in a Television Drama Series in 1987 for her appearance at ‘a year in the life‘.
So far Amanda is upset over Sea Hawks loss after a new federal regulation has taken public shuttle service away from football games nationwide, and Seattle leaving fans like Amanda Peterson upset. The Peterson’s have held season tickets for six years. As parking became more expensive around Q west Field, they let Metro Transit shuttles do the driving for them. She is famous after being nominated the Best Young Actress in a Motion Picture – Comedy ‘can’t buy me love’ in 1987. She was nominated as the Best Starring Performance by a Young Actress - Motion Picture ‘explorers’ and also as the Best Young Supporting Actress in a Daytime or Nighttime Drama ‘Boone in 1983. She was also nominated the Best Young Actress in a New Television Series ‘Boone’ in 1983.
She is married to David Hartley and they have two children. She is a daughter to a medical doctor who is an ear, nose and throat specialist. Her life has featured guys like Patrick Dempsey, during her stint in ‘cant buy me love’ and Johnny Borrell in ‘made of honor’
That Seattle Seahawks blogger is not the same Amanda. That article, written by a blogger from India I believe, confuses someone with the same name and adds some of her credits to it.
Ok. looks like she's in burlington, vt. Follow this link http://www.peoplefinders.com/summary.asp?fn=Phyllis&mn=&ln=Peterson&city=&state=CO and then go down to the 19th listing. It's for phyllis peterson, associated names amanda peterson. it lists her addresses she's lived at as greeley, co, los angeles, venice, ca and burlington, vt. it also shows a list of possible relatives so it should be easy to figure out if this is her. if anyone's willing to pony up the $$ we can get all the details. we all need to know!
Can't Buy Me Love reminds me of Valley Girl in one respect. The star actors in those movies (Patrick Dempsey and Nicholas Cage) went on to have successful careers in Hollywood, while the careers of the star actresses in those movies (Amanda Peterson and Deborah Foreman) fizzled out and died.
Okay, I'm in my seventies (as in 70) and saw "Can't Buy Me Love" for the first time on the Oxygen Network. Time melts away for ANYONE who sees Amanda in that film. Brings bacak old memories and many of the fantasies that I had when I was younger. Hope she is still around and happy.
Saw the movie tonight CBML.
What a nostalgic memory trigger.
Hope all is well Amanda.
I graduated in '87. This was one of my favorite films as a teen and saw it recently on Oxygen. Made me look to see what ever happened to her. I guess there isn't anything definite. Too bad she couldn't stick around but I understand why some people walk away from the business. Debra Winger did it too. Amanda was my first teenage star crush. I'm sure I'm not the only one out there. She was beautiful, but she also could act.
I would love to see her guest spot on "Grey's" myself just to see ol' McDreamy have a coronary. Oh well, If she reads these comments from everyone, I'm sure she will know she is missed and still admired by many. I wish her the best.
I saw Amanda Peterson in 1996 in Greeley, CO. working in her Dad's doctor's office. Don't know if she is still there or not....I wish the best for her!!
Amanda graduated two years before my sister did at Greeley Central High School. I've never asked her if she knew her way back then.
why did she disappear. It is my dream to meet her because of her performance in i posed for playboy and cant buy me love iam on my way to becoming an actor.
What ever happened to fellow actresses like Amy Dolenz and Tina Caspary? Tina had minor roles in movies in the mid to late 1980s. She was on the hit movie Can't Buy Me Love...last time I saw a movie from her it was a movie about a werewolf. I Googled her name and saw her in the unaired pilot for Married...with Children. They say her name is Tina Cyphert now. Anybody knows what happened to her why she hasn't make anymore movies lately? She and fellow teen actresses Amanda Peterson (Can't Buy Me Love) and Andrea Elson (ALF) disappeared from the showbiz.
"What ever happened to fellow actresses like Amy Dolenz and Tina Caspary"
Tina is a dance teacher. She hasn't acted since TEEN WITCH in 1989.
As for Ami Dolenz, check the sidebar on the blog. I recently wrote a story about her.
Amanda now lives in Greeley CO. She is a falling down gutter drunk with a few mental problems. I know Amanda personally from a bar I used to manage. She is a mess. Last time I saw Amanda was on a camping trip. She had no change of clothes, no tent or sleeping bag, it was cold outside, she was falling down drunk. I feel sorry for her
okay. I know Amanda, and she is doing well. we were roomates for about six months, and like many of us has had a rough life, but appreciates what she is blessed w/.
God bless you Amanda. and you still owe me a jar of peanut butter! :) lol! nevermind. just hope to see you sometime soon.
i'm from greeley and shes fine and is not a druggy never has been but she is a lot of fun to hang with at the dugout. you people need to get a life and leave her alone, she is an angel
Man, I would love to meet Amanda.. I was in high school when this movie came out, and really admired both her acting and beauty.. Amanda, if you're listening, we should meet!!
If anyone knows how to get in contact with her, let me know.. I would pay some serious cash if she visited my local bar.

has anyone seen the latest Golden Corral commercial for seafood? I think that's Amanda Peterson portraying a waitress. Can anyone verify.
Enlyn- I thought the same thing when I saw that Golden Corral commercial. I did a search online, but your comment is the only thing that came up. I hope the rumors are not true and that it is her... I don't know, but I usually have a good eye for recognizing faces.
I saw the Golden Corral commercial as well.
She looks a bit like her, but isn't she a lot taller than Amanda?
I wish I could say it was her, but I'm not so sure.
I'm 48 years old. I was in love with her then and still in love with her now. I would just love to know that she is doing well. A real photo of her now, would be great.
Mark in Sugar Grove, Il.
i graduated in 1986 from a texas high school and the movie " can't buy me love, was a popular movie right up their with,, footloose,,and sixteen candles......please amanda if u read these '''please return to the movie screen,,,,,,thanks from midwest city , okla
Hello to all of you.
I was and I am big fan of Mandy.
She was really hot. Hope she still is. Would love to see/know what ever happened to Mandy.
Btw i found this on net:
1.Amanda Peterson played in Crocodile Hunter: A Tribute to Steve Irwin, The (from 2006) as Herself - Reporter with actor Jeff Fatt (as Jeff).
Daniel
Amanda Peterson is fine and living in Northern Colorado. I have met her. She lives with her two year old daughter and is going to school to get her degree in theater.
does any 1 have da link to the corral commercial? maybe you tube?
I grew up in Greeley and was introduced to Amanda by mutual friends several times. I graduated the year after she did. First of all, to the person that said their sister graduated from Central with her - that is not true. She went to U.H. (University), not Central. I do know for a fact that she worked at her dad's medical practice as a receptionist after high school because I saw her there. I also know for a fact that she spent a lot of time at the Armory before it closed down. I have a friend that works for the DA's office in Greeley, who has confirmed that she has been in and out of trouble with the law, although I don't have the details on why. You would think it would be in the paper since she was such a "Big deal celebrity" in our little town - but for whatever reason, it does not appear to have been. As of the last time I spoke with my friend, she was not married and was still around this area.
I was always a bit starstruck by her when I was a kid. I hope that she has found some sanity and peace in her life - I hate what Hollywood seems to do to young stars.
Amanda was a talent that you just don't see anymore. She was honest and had such a passion for what she did. You could tell just watching interviews with her. But, you could also see that she wanted NO part of the Hollywood hoopla, and the cliquish society that went along with it. If she willingly ducked out of the limelight, she was smart. I, too, have been there. Most of you know who I am, but wish to stay as I am now. Private and happy. There is SO much more to being caught up in the spotlight than you can imagine. Please just know that it's hell for actors, especially young women actors. And thank you for all the good things you fans have said...it's truly inspiring.
Hi everybody, does anyone have news about amanda? i think i´m a little late reading this blog today in 2009.. i saw the film cbml today and i am also a big fan of amanda..many greetz from germany ;)

Hi I happen to know where Amanda is. It is the craziest thing to find out the nice lady I have been talking to is Amanda Peterson. She is doing very well and has a beautiful little girl. She is neighbors with my daughter and her husband, I still cant believe it. I had no idea who she was until tonight what a crazy world we live in.
