PREMIERE: A Look Back

While Premiere magazine is no more, they have a fun feature on their website. A look back at all of their covers. I've been reading since the beginning and had just about all of these. So, it was very nostalgic to see them again.

Some interesting ones

From September of 1988, this was one of my favorites. I remember getting this and thinking "Wow! The star of GREASE 2 is on the cover of a magazine!"

Probably one of the funnier magazine covers of all time, to promote TWINS.

Some covers, like the above for I LOVE YOU TO DEATH, are probably best forgotten. Great cast, but does anyone remember that film? I saw it and I don't even remember it.

And whatever happened to Greta Scacchi?

There was Winona Ryder and Cher.

And Meg Ryan.

Even the great Jennifer Jason Leigh.

And David Letterman.

I remember this being one of the best stories about Gwyneth Paltrow I had read.

Sandra Bullock.

By the early 2000's, you can see the covers decline in quality a bit. With the title font even getting too close to fashion magazines than the bold styles before it.

I mean, nothing against Tom Cruise, but this cover from July 2002 has to be one of the worst covers I have seen. Very bland. I can see why people weren't buying the magazine in this time period. Even I thought twice before renewing.

But, then things started to pick up again. You can see the cover design improving. From this cover:

with Keira Knightley, you can even see the influence of the British film magazines, the multiple images on the cover, a lot of text. And the content of the magazine was improving.

But alas, it was too little, too late. And the magazine's sales never really recovered.

Still a great magazine, for almost twenty years.

(NOTE: Thanks to Cinematical for the heads up on the gallery)

Great post.

I'm torn on the death of print and am going to write about it myself.

I love Premiere and still have boxes filled with them.

The Twins cover is excellent and man Meg Ryan was so damn hot. Now look at her.

That's almost as depressing as the death of Premiere.

I don't know if you saw the trailer for Meg's new film IN THE LAND OF WOMEN, but she doesn't look that bad in it.

Maybe not TOP GUN hot, but that was twenty years ago.
