A great story in the Springfield Republican this morning (not online, but it is also at the Boston Globe).
Dolores Hart was an actress in the 50's. While never a huge star, she appeared with Elvis in both LOVING YOU and KING CREOLE, and several other films and TV shows, including WHERE THE BOYS ARE and an episode of ALFRED HITCHCOCK PRESENTS.
In 1962, she was engaged and unhappy. So, she left L.A. to become a Benedectine Nun in Bethlehem, CT. There she remained for over 40 years.
The story was written in early April, when she returned to L.A. for the first time in over 40 years, to talk about a neurolgical disorder that she has, peripheral idopathic neuropathy. She has testified in front of congressional hearings about it, trying to bring about more research for it.
Fascinating to read, how someone who was starring with Elvis and major Hollywood stars could just give it all up and walk away.
But the best part of the story, she hasn't given up on the industry. She is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, votes for the Oscars every year, and watches all of the nominated films.
