Remember when John Woo was a great director?
Think back.
15 years ago, back before he did that Van Damme film. When you could only find bootlegged copies of his films in art house type video stores.
Back then, you could find films like A BETTER TOMORROW 1 & 2, THE KILLER, HARD BOILED, ONCE A THIEF and especially BULLET IN THE HEAD, his masterpiece. Discovering his films was one of the great movie moments of the decade.
You would tell everyone who was listening how he is the only one making action films that mattered, how Chow Yun-Fat was cooler than any American actor, and that if they don't know their films, they are really missing out.
Woo finally came to the US and, other than FACE / OFF, his films did not live up to the hype. I had pretty much given up on his U.S. work.
But, Entertainment Weekly has an interesting bit of news this week.
Woo will team up with producer Terence Chang to make a film called RED CLIFF. Set in 208 A.D., it follows an "epic Chinese battle" between two warring kingdoms.
While Woo didn't fare too well with his last epic, WINDTALKERS, this one is going to star Tony Leung and, get ready for this, Chow Yun-Fat!!!
So, there is hope.
